!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! when I still had my Fiat 500 and I thought it would be fun to revisit it. For those of us that are older, w hat do you think would be your reaction if you were able to show high-school-aged you your current ride?
Back when I was in high school my car was a bland old ‘83 Celebrity sedan with the 2.8 V6 . It made 112 HP (allegedly). It was a good car, though. I had a lot of fun in that thing. I drove it all over Colorado Springs, including some ill-advised off-roading that fortunately didn’t harm it.
When I was a Junior m y dad did happen to buy a brand new ‘92 F-150 XL 4x4 with the inline 6 and a 5-speed, and I did get to drive it. In fact, we drove it back to Upper Michigan in March of that year right after he got it because his mom had died and we were headed to her funeral. I remember it being pretty slow and uninteresting, but now I’m a big fan of it. He still has it, by the way, and it is... not in the best of shape. My dad has the unusual ability to get vehicles to rust here.
Anyway, how would I have reacted to my current truck ? Probably with some indifference, but I know I’d be very fascinated by the half-doors on the extended cab because those didn’t come along until the mid-to-late-90s. I know I’d also be blown away by my plug-and-play Sirius unit. That was always the dream, to have the equivalent of cable for your radio. I remember when I moved in with my high school best friend a couple years later and we got cable in our apartment that included DMX (Digital Music Express) and I loved it. It had a remote with an LCD info screen that told you the artist name and song titles and it was so cool . I’d also be floored by my iPod, and the fact that I could just plug it into the AUX jack and listen to every single song I have in my music collection. I did have a decent cassette player in my ‘83 Celebrity, but that doesn’t really compare. I know I would have been shocked that future me was willing to own a 15-mpg gas hog, especially when gas prices are nearly $3 per gallon now.
Then I would show me my partner’s Hyundai Elantra Limited and explain how it’s an economy car, even though it has features I would have never expected like heated leather seats, a backup camera, blind spot detection, and that it connects to your mobile phone. T he Elantra that had just been introduced back then was pretty shitty, so there would be some major astonishment, I’m sure. Our Elantra has 35 more hp, weighs 300 lbs more, and gets nearly double the MPG of my old Celebrity.
Finally, I’d show me my big honkin’ work van. We never got the big euro-style cargo vans back in the day , so it’s quite a bit bigger than the Econolines, Chevy vans, and Ram Vans from that era . Being a delivery driver was not something that would have occurr ed to me as a career choice back then. I think I would be genuinely shocked that I drive it every day for a living.
What about you? Would teenage you approve or disapprove of your current vehicle and/or fleet?

Oh god. High school aged me would look at my fleet of shitboxes (ranked in order of least to greatest shittiness: 1996 Golf, 1994 Saturn SC2, 1997 Jetta) and think “what the hell is wrong with you?” and to be fair, that’s what I think whenever I reflect on my fleet. And what my family says. And what my friends say.
When I was in highschool (keep in mind I graduated HS in 2015) my ride was my parents’ 2010 Elantra. I still think fondly of that car. It was... so much better than anything in my current fleet.
RIP Elantra. You were a good car, but you’ve gone on to the great junkyard in the sky. I think. I should run the VIN.

High school me would be pleased (but not surprised) that I still own the 88 integra that high school me owned, and that I did indeed successfully turn it into a real racecar. That was a process that started my senior year of high school, which not coincidentally was the last time I ever had significant savings to speak of.
As for my truck, high school me would’ve been disappointed that it is only a regular cab and not 4X4 (I would later own plenty of trucks that were neither), but would’ve been dumbfounded that the first vehicle I owned with an aluminum body, active aero and a twin turbocharged V6 was a 1/2 ton pickup truck. High school me probably would’ve had to buy a lot of rear tires as a consequence of exploiting that just over 5 second 0-60 acceleration as often as possible.

Younger, pre high school Me thought the Solara’s were really cool and that they were really good looking cars. Then high school Me found out that they were essentially Camry’s and lost interest along with deciding that I didn’t like the cars styling due to the wonky rear end height. I seriously only bought the Solara because I needed a decent car and it was a good deal. I don’t have t he same love for when I first saw them on the roads years ago, however I do like the styling again and more than t hat I appreciate everything the car is meant to be. It is. Mine has been in the family since new, with my aunt buying it new in 1988. My dad bought it from her in 1996 as his daily driver and autocross car. It become my first car in high school. No automatic here, and the original red paint looked pretty good up through about 2008ish (repainted it myself a few years ago). Still on the original, never rebuilt engine, despite 132k miles and many years of racing (and autocrossing before that). I’ve got the original window sticker and every piece of paper related to the car since. I also legitimately remember riding in the car as a five year old kid.

My mom tried to teach me but she had no idea how to explain it and the clutch on her car was absolute mush. We also had a Golf with a really sensitive clutch that she couldn’t drive but in hindsight that probably would have been a better learning experience.
Mom was a horrible driving instructor in general and this was before anyone realized I don’t have depth perception. I’ve figured out how to deal with it now (except on a mountain bike) but learning to drive was terrifying and I really wasn’t interested.

Last year was 10 years since I graduated, I had a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The automatic with a 4 banger. I knew nothing but loved the looks and was growing rapidly into a car guy. Last year I bought my Cayman S roughly the same month I would have graduated a decade ago. If I had ever thought I'd have a manual, somewhat modern, Porsche as my car in 10 years I would have laughed in my dumbass face. I never actually even thought of Porsches or anything, not until I was researching my next car back in 17. So it's not like a dream come true, but I'm really fucking proud of myself I think.

My sister is ok with driving in general, but she never ever wanted to learn. My uncle did try to teach her once in his old S10 but it just never clicked. Compare that to my mom, who actually likes to drive a manual. She had two manual Civics in a row when we were growing up (a ‘75 and a brand-new ‘86 that I learned in), then later a manual ‘96 Sentra, and they still have a manual Accent and an old F-150. It’ s actually a very interesting question.
No doubt about it, high school me would have thought the 600 was awesome, w ho can hate a V12 Twin Turbo German barge. But high school me would have probably found it pretty excessive and unnecessary.
Depending on when you spoke to HS me, he would either be driving a ‘94 Park Avenue Ultra, a ‘96 Seville SLS, a ‘98 DeVille D’elegance, or the final ‘98 Lincoln Continental. And I liked those a lot. The DeVille is still the most comfortable, best fitting car I’ve ever owned. European cars don’t have American ergonomics. American cars don’t have American ergonomics anymore; you can’t drop the steering wheel into your lap and spread out on a bench seat. Cadillac was still making the DTS when I graduated, so I never thought I would have had to buy a European car. If I wanted all the toys that S-Classes have, but a DTS Platinum covers those bases nicely. And if I did have to switch to anything (Ford had just cancelled the panther platform) other than American - Hyundai had just rolled out the new Equus and my dad and I had driven a Genesis 4.6 at a Drive for the Cure event when they came out.
HS me didn't think much of European reliability either.

My high school vehicle was an AMC Grand Wagone er, but I wanted a Triumph motorcycle and a E39 M5.
I had a Triumph motorcycle in my twenties until I hit a deer on it. Since then I’ve had a bunch of BMW 3 Series cars, but no M cars.
So, I’m giving myself a C+ on this one.

I liked them back in the ‘70s when I was a pre-teen, and bought my first in college. Not the ‘70s shaggin’ wagon type vans , but practical big station wagon type vans.
I haven't always been so practical, having driven all sorts of fancy German machinery from BMWs to Mercedes to Porsche, but for some reason I felt like an imposter in those vehicles even though I had the 6-figure income to justify such purchases. Minivans just feel honest and humble to me, and that's how I live my life these days.

If I could have shown high school me my car:
Freshman me would’ve wondered why it doesn’t have a trunk full of subs
Sophomore me would’ve wondered why it wasn’t either a lifted full size truck or a bagged and dropped mini truck
Junior me would’ve wondered why it wasn’t something that looked like it would have belonged in The Fast and the Furious
Senior me would’ve wondered how I could afford such a ‘fancy luxury brand’
I would have told them all how much of an idiot I am and to never buy a fucking piece of shit bmw .

I had a 2005 SWB Caravan with a 4-cylinder. I bought it with only 49k on the clock. I had a Buick LeSabre that was bleeding me dry. I needed something reliable and for a time it was. I later found out that the previous owner never changed the trans fluid at 30 k like you have to and the transmission ate itself. But other than that and the fact that it was pretty slow it was an ok vehicle.

If I could have warned HS me about anything from my imminent automotive future, it would have been to hang on to the CRX I was about to buy after graduating and not trade it for the Sable a couple years later. That started me down a path of very bad financial judgment that it took me years to recover from.

Oh snap Son! You hit the nail on the head. If my high school self had my S8, I’d either be dead or without a license. I got in enough trouble with my van back in the day. One thing I do wish I could do is tell my high school self to hang onto my first van. I’d live to have that nowadays.

I’m still single, and to the best of my knowledge don’t have any kids. There’s something about the spa ce efficiency of most minivans that appeals to the enginerd in me.

Fairly disappointed that I own a car at all, astonished that I have a truck, and outraged that I enjoy spending time in them.

I like this game.
I think high school me, who was driving a 1984 Saab 900 Turbo, would look at my 2013 Volvo C30 and think "obscure Swedish manual and turbo... What a rutt you're in. Wait.... What are all those other cars? Is that the Saab?! Why do you still have the Saab?!"

In high school I drove a Volvo wagon. I currently drive a Volvo wagon. High school me would be okay with it. High school me would probably like to have a word with me about the El Camino.

Similar to me - the university gave us a year-long bus pass as part of tui
tion, which is what I mostly used. But I had to get a car for one of my teaching practicums as it was across the city (I went to Mount Saint Vincent University in H
alifax) and even if I caught the earliest buses, I wouldn’t have made it to the school on time.

I think High School me was very much like current me, only less “grown up” with less money.
I’d probably be flipping over my Rally van, be intrigued by the Car, and indifferent towards the new van.
I would probably wonder why I don’t have something with 500+ hp though, even in HS a couple of the vehicles I drove regularly had over 500 whp.

I didn’t have a car. So high school me would probably not want to drive a bright green car, but also think it’s rad as fuck.
